Anthony Rapp on His Rent Co-Star Adam Pascal's Star Turn in Memphis: 'He's Kind of a Goofball'

Anthony Rapp was one of many familiar faces who turned up to support Adam Pascal at Memphis’ 1,000th Broadway performance. After the curtain came down, Broadway.com asked Rapp what he thought of his Rent co-star’s performance as wacky DJ Huey Calhoun in the Tony-winning musical.

“I’m very, very, very, very, very proud,” said Rapp. “I’ve known that [Pascal] is kind of a goofball, so it’s really cool to see that now the rest of the Broadway world is discovering that he is capable of being hilarious. But it’s so much more than hilarious; he is incapable of a false note ever. Everything is so truthful at the same time as being really fun and silly. He’s just a wonderful, wonderful actor.”

Rapp and Pascal rocketed to stardom in 1996 as the original Mark Cohen and Roger Davis in Jonathan Larson’s Rent. In 2005, both men reprised their roles in the movie adaption of the iconic musical, and then returned to the Broadway production for a six-week run in 2007. In 2009, they reprised their roles one last time in Rent the Broadway Tour, which traveled all over the U.S. as well as Japan and South Korea. The two actors joined forces again in 2011 for a dual concert at New York City's Town Hall.

Pascal joined Broadway’s Memphis on October 25, 2011. In addition to Rent, he starred as Radames Aida, the Emcee in Cabaret and Freddie Trumper in Chess. His film credits include School of Rock, Temptation and SLC Punk!.
